Individual funding by the DFG
Research Grant
The research grant enables all persons with completed scientific training to carry out a single, thematically and temporally limited research project at any time, regardless of the topic.
As part of the research grant, you can apply for various modules.
An important module for early career researchers is the „Own Position”. With this module, you can apply for funds to finance your position, so that you can devote your full working time to your project. Please note that you need an employer's declaration if you apply for the own position. With this declaration the university agrees to employ you for the duration of the project in case of positive funding. The employer's declaration is signed by the chancellor. Please contact Dr. Claudia Hübner if you need an employer's declaration.
As part of the basic module, you can apply for additional funds that are necessary for the successful implementation of your project, in particular personnel funds to finance positions for doctoral students, technical assistants or student assistants. If you apply for personnel funds for other persons, you do not need an employer's declaration. Nevertheless, we recommend that you seek the conversation in your department to prepare the possibly necessary workplace for new employees.
Walter Benjamin-Programme
The Walter Benjamin-Programme enables researchers in the postdoctoral training phase to independently conduct their own research project at a location of their choice. The project can be carried out at a research institution in Germany or abroad, with the host institution providing support for the project. The application is submitted by the project management. Please also contact division 6.1, Dr. Claudia Hübner, in good time if you would like to submit an application to the Walter Benjamin-Programme. For these applications, you will need a declaration from the host institution, which must be signed by the Chancellor of the University.
Dr. Claudia Hübner will assist you in obtaining the signature, coordinating the necessary agreements, calculating the budget and with the application formalities.
Emmy Noether-Programme
The Emmy Noether-Programme includes the usually six-year funding of a junior research group. Junior researchers should thus achieve early scientific independence and increase the employability. Applicants can apply postdocs with usually two to four years research experience after the doctorate. The applicants must have international research experience.
When applying for an Emmy Noether group, the support from the department is essential. Please contact the departmental representative and the speaker of the department early.
Please also contact division 6.1, Dr. Claudia Hübner, early if you would like to apply for an Emmy Noether junior research group. For these applications, you need a statement from the receiving institution, which must be signed by the chancellor of the university.
Dr. Claudia Hübner will assist you with obtaining the signature, coordinating the necessary arrangements, budget calculation and application formalities.
Heisenberg-Programme
The Heisenberg-Programme is aimed at scientists who already meet the requirements for being appointed to a professorship.
After being accepted into the Heisenberg Programme, you can choose between four funding options and combine them if necessary during the five-year funding period. No matter which option you choose, the support of the department and the university is essential when applying. Therefore, seek an early dialogue with representatives of the department.
Please also contact division 6.1, Dr. Claudia Hübner, early if you would like to apply for an Emmy Noether junior research group. For these applications, you need a statement from the receiving institution, which must be signed by the head of administration of the university.
Dr. Claudia Hübner will assist you with obtaining the signature, coordinating the necessary arrangements, budget calculation and application formalities.
The funding options:
- The Heisenberg position funds your own position at a host institution in Germany.
- For clinically working scientists, the Heisenberg rotation position offers the possibility of being fully or partially replaced.
- The Heisenberg scholarship supports the further qualification of successful applicants at host institutions abroad.
- The Heisenberg professorship provides funds for a temporary professorship. Here, the host institution commits to making the professorship permanent after the end of the funding. This also means the highest preparation and planning effort among the four options.
All program lines can be combined with a grant application for project funding.
Application packages
Individual project proposals (individual grants) that are thematically related can be submitted to the DFG as a package of applications. The individual projects are self-contained and can be carried out independently of the other individual projects. This is how application packages differ from application consortia such as a research group.
The review, evaluation and funding decision are based on the individual project.
For further information, please refer to the explanations on individual grants.
Scientific Networks
Scientific Networks offer scientists at all career stages the opportunity to engage in a multi-year cross-location exchange on a self-chosen scientific topic area with the aim of achieving a concrete result.
A Scientific Network consists of a fixed group of usually 10 to 20 people, which can also include scientists working abroad.
International Scientific Events
The DFG provides funding for both the organization of scientific conferences with an international character in Germany and the hosting of annual meetings of German professional societies or German professional groups with regional significance.
The funding of international scientific conferences in Germany is based on the number of participating doctoral researchers. The funding of annual meetings includes grants for the travel expenses of distinguished speakers from abroad.
The application should be submitted at least 6 months before the event starts.
Please refer to the DFG website for the leaflets and forms required for the application.
