Coordinated programmes of the DFG

Collaborative Research Centers/Transregios

Collaborative Research Centers are long-term, lasting up to twelve years, research institutions of universities, in which scientists work together within an interdisciplinary research program. They enable the implementation of innovative, challenging, complex and long-term designed research projects by coordinating and concentrating people and resources in the applying universities. They serve the institutional focus and structure formation. Cooperations with non-university research institutions are explicitly desired.

Collaborative Research Centers consist of a multitude of subprojects. The number and size of the subprojects result from the research program of the network. The subprojects are led by individual or several scientists together.

(International) Graduate Schools

A research group is a close working alliance of several outstanding scientists who work together on a research task. The research project goes far beyond the funding possibilities within the framework of individual funding in the normal or priority procedure in terms of its thematic, temporal and financial scope. The funding of research groups is intended to help provide the necessary personnel and material resources for a medium-term - usually eight years (until October 1, 2018: up to six years) - cooperation. Research groups often help to establish new directions of work. The same principles apply to quality criteria as for project grants.

A research group consists of various program modules, whose weighting and combination take into account the respective disciplinary requirements. The funding program thus allows a largely flexible design of the research network, depending on the respective question, the involved scientific fields and the desired structural aspect. In this context, research groups can offer opportunities for junior groups, strengthen cooperation with non-university partners, enable temporary releases of scientists and intensify international cooperation. In their different forms of design, research groups can be integrated into overarching research policy initiatives. Examples of this are "Clinical Research Groups" or "Collegiate Research Groups".

Priority Programmes

A special feature of a priority programme is the cross-regional cooperation of the participating scientists. Priority programmes can be established by the Senate of the DFG if coordinated funding promises scientific benefit for the relevant area. The Senate negotiates once a year on the proposals submitted by the scientific community for the establishment of priority programmes.

A priority programme is usually funded for a period of six years. The DFG invites interested scientists to submit project proposals for participation in a priority programme by a certain deadline.
